One of the most important decisions in your NDIS journey is how your plan will be managed. There are three options: Plan-Managed, Self-Managed, or NDIA-Managed. Each has different levels of flexibility, choice, and administrative responsibility.
The good news? You can mix and match - having different management types for different budget categories, and you can change your choice at your next plan review.
The Three Management Types
1. Plan-Managed ⭐ Most Popular
How It Works:
- A registered plan manager handles all the paperwork and payments for you
- You choose your providers (both registered AND non-registered)
- Your plan includes funding to pay for the plan manager (at no cost to you)
- The plan manager pays your providers and handles all claims to the NDIA
Pros of Plan Management ✅
- Maximum Choice: Use BOTH registered AND non-registered providers
- Less Paperwork: Plan manager handles all the admin
- Professional Support: Expert help understanding NDIS rules
- No Cost to You: Funded separately in your plan
Cons of Plan Management ⚠️
- You need to send invoices to your plan manager (not always instant payment)
- Relies on good communication with your plan manager
- Some delay between invoice and payment to provider
Best For: People who want maximum choice and flexibility, those who don't want to manage paperwork, anyone using non-registered providers.
2. Self-Managed
How It Works:
- You manage all your NDIS funding yourself
- You pay providers directly
- You submit claims to the NDIA for reimbursement
- You keep all records and receipts
Pros of Self-Management ✅
- Ultimate Flexibility: Complete control over who you hire and how you spend
- Direct Relationships: Build direct relationships with your providers
- Quick Response: Immediate access to services
Cons of Self-Management ⚠️
- Time & Admin: YOU handle all paperwork and claims
- Financial Responsibility: You pay providers upfront
- Compliance Risk: Must ensure all claims meet NDIS rules
Best For: People comfortable with admin and technology, those who want maximum control, participants with good organizational skills.
3. NDIA-Managed
How It Works:
- The NDIA manages your funding directly
- You can ONLY use registered NDIS providers
- Providers claim payments directly from the NDIA
- You have the least paperwork
Pros of NDIA Management ✅
- Minimal Admin: Providers claim directly - you do almost nothing
- Provider Quality Assurance: All providers are registered and vetted
- No Financial Risk: You never handle money
Cons of NDIA Management ⚠️
- Limited Choice: Can ONLY use registered NDIS providers
- Less Flexibility: Can't negotiate rates or use non-registered providers
- Slower Processes: Claims can take longer to process
Best For: People who want minimal administration, those uncomfortable with paperwork or technology.
Mixing Management Types
You Don't Have To Choose Just One!
Many participants use a combination. For example:
- Example 1: Core Supports: Plan-Managed | Capacity Building: NDIA-Managed
- Example 2: Core Supports: Self-Managed | Capital Supports: NDIA-Managed
How to Decide What's Right for You
Ask yourself these questions:
1. How comfortable am I with paperwork and admin?
- Very comfortable → Self-Managed
- Somewhat comfortable → Plan-Managed
- Not comfortable → NDIA-Managed
2. Do I want to use non-registered providers?
- Yes → Plan-Managed or Self-Managed
- No preference → Any option
- Prefer registered only → NDIA-Managed
3. How many providers will I have?
- Many (5+) → Plan-Managed (less admin for you)
- Few (1-3) → Self-Managed (manageable)
Cost Comparison
| Management Type | Cost to You | Admin Burden |
|---|---|---|
| Plan-Managed | $0 (funded separately) | Low |
| Self-Managed | $0 | High |
| NDIA-Managed | $0 | Very Low |
Important: All management types are free to you - the difference is in time, flexibility, and choice.
Common Questions
Q: Can I have a plan manager AND self-manage some supports?
A: Yes! You can split management by budget category.
Q: If I'm self-managed, do I get reimbursed immediately?
A: Claims can take 1-2 weeks to process.
Q: What if my plan manager isn't working out?
A: You can change plan managers at any time.
Q: Can I pay family members as support workers?
A: Yes, but only if you're Plan-Managed or Self-Managed. NDIA-Managed does not allow this.
